Sturla Brandth Grøvlen, Norway

Sturla Brandth Grøvlen, Norway, was a student at the European Film College in 2001-2002. He is now the acclaimed cinematographer behind films such as "Another Round" and "Victoria".
After EFC, Sturla attended the Bergen Academy of Art, where he then used his graduation project to get into the National Film School of Denmark.
After working hard for a number of years on music videos, documentaries and short films, he was hired by the Danish director Anders Morgenthaler to shoot the feature The 11th Hour (I am Here). That lead him to German filmmaker Sebastian Shipper, who hired him to film the one-take thriller, Victoria.
For his amazing work on Victoria, Sturla Brandth Grøvlen won a Silver Bear in Berlin in 2015 for Outstanding Artistic Contribution, and after that his career took off, and since then he has several award-winning feature films in his portfolio. Among others, he shot the Icelandic film Rams ('Hrútar'), which won the Un Certain Regard Award in Cannes in 2015, and in 2021, Sturla shot Thomas Vinterberg's hit film Another Round, a job that landed him a nomination for Best Cinematography at the Danish Film Awards.
Sturla Brandth Grøvlen says about his stay at the European Film College:
"European Film College meant a lot to me. It’s one thing with everything you can gain from it professionally. In a way, that’s very much up to the individual student. And I just made a decision that I would work as much as I could and take part in as many projects as possible. And so I did a lot of experimenting, both in sound and cinematography. It was truly a creative explosion and I just worked as much as humanly possible. The other thing is the sense of unity you get. I still have a lot of friends from back then, and I work with them often on different projects."
It was truly a creative explosion.
