Two EFC graduates from European Film College traveled to Seoul with a student film to take part of the 21st Seoul International Women’s Festival (SIWFF), one of South Korea’s most prestigious film festivals.
Joining female filmmakers from all over the world, alumni Jeehye Jang and Astrid Hohle Hansen visited Seoul International Women's Film Festival in 2019. Astrid and Jeehye attended the festival to screen ”Re:play”; a documentary hybrid film made as one of the graduation films at European Film College in May that same year.
The film ”Re:play” was a part of the festival's short film programme "Asian Shorts Competition" and together with the other shorts it screened at two sold out events at the festival venue.
”Re:play” is about the impact of memories and how the choices women make might change their lives. In the film we see a woman that witnesses actors reenact an important memory from her youth at the Faroe Islands.
Being part of a bigger community of fellow female filmmakers
Jeehye Jang (director) and Astrid Hohle Hansen (producer) truly enjoyed their visit at SIWFF. The festival is one of the leading festivals in the world and is very well organised and generous towards its guests. There is a lot of opportunities to network and debate issues concerning film and gender.
Being part of this international festival created a feeling of being part of a bigger community of fellow female filmmakers from all over the world. Director Jeehye Jang emphasizes the importance of the festival’s encouragement of young upcoming female filmmakers:
“The festival felt like a huge and warm community of female filmmakers, in which everyone was encouraged and inspired by each other. It felt like the festival was trying to foster young filmmakers by giving them an opportunity to present their works. SIWFF is extremely political and also features and celebrates women from outside the film industry - like Seo Ji-Hyun; a South Korean prosecutor who sparked the country's MeToo movement. The activist element of the festival makes this experience even more meaningful.”
See the world through women’s eyes
Since its inception in 1997 the Seoul International Women's Film Festival has been a warm hub for female filmmakers from all around the world. The slogan for the festival is: See the World through Women´s Eyes.
The festival screens female filmmakers from all over the world as well as presenting a retrospective programme category that pays tribute to two pioneers of feminist cinema Agnès Varda and Barbara Hammer.
